Walk around the World October 2007
Brain Tumour organisations around the world joined forces in late October to celebrate International Brain Tumour Awareness Week, led by IBTA (International Brain Tumour Alliance). One of their goals to raise awareness, was to invite people to "donate" their miles from any sponsored walk to a global target of the 25,000 mile circumference of the earth. We are delighted to report that they more than doubled their target, with over 56,500 miles contributed. Our own Veronica O'Connor and Elaine Johnston participated in the activity earlier in the year (see our Past Events page). See www.theibta.org for more details

Out of Africa! July 2007

Mother and daughter Elaine and Kim Johnston have travelled 5,919 miles from Abroath to Tanzania to follow in the footsteps of the Maasai trek. They walked in the rift valley of the Ngorongoro Conservation area and around the Ngorongoro crater rim.
Elaine Johnston decided to do the sponsored trek in memory of her husband Mark, who died from a brain tumour two and a half years ago. They surpassed their original aim to raise £1 a mile, and raised a staggering £11,000 for BTRC. “The staff at Halliburton in Arbroath and Aberdeen, where my husband used to work, were very generous, as were the British Legion Pipe Band, and people at the Chapelpark Primary School in Forfar who have given me money throughout the year.”
Read more in their local newspaper, The Courier (Tayside & Fife)
Elaine and Kim have also contributed their miles to the"Walk Around the World" project organised by IBTA.

Walk around the World contribution
from Veronica July 2007
Veronica has contributed her miles to the "Walk Around the World" project that is being organised by IBTA.

I walked from Fatima in Portugal to Lourdes in France via Santiago Compostela in Spain. It was a tough pilgrimage because of the very bad weather but any walk in support of BTRC is worth every minute. The walk took me through the villages and historical towns of Spain with their their wonderful churches, rural villages and stunning countryside. It was both a cultural and spiritual pilgrimage. I also knew John Fulcher for many years and was deeply saddened by his death from brain cancer. He was the most kindest of men and a true friend. I am very happy to support BTRC at all times as research into this type of cancer is a major priority to improve and save lives.
In addition, The IBTA is organising the first International Brain Tumo(u)r Awareness Week during 21-27 October 2007.
