International Brain Tumour Awareness Week
& 2009 IBTA Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours
November 2009
The 3rd International Brain Tumour Awareness Week was held in November 2009 to increase awareness about brain tumours, the particular challenges of a brain tumour and the need for a special response and an increased research effort.

The Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours has again been a success with dozens of walks and events being held in different countries. They are still waiting for some reports but have already exceeded their World Walk target of 200,000 kms (five times around the world at the Equator) with a total to date of 224,862 kms, involving 37,537 people, who raised the equivalent of at least $3.4m USD for their local brain tumour research and support organisations (no funds go to the IBTA).

See their December newsletter for more details on their tremendous success!

Big Wight Matter
September 2009

On a glorious weekend in late September, a stalwart group of walkers took part in the inaugural Big Wight Matter event on the Isle of Wight. All supporting Brain Tumour Research, several member charities were represented, and adults, children and four-legged friends took part in a 15-mile walk - or shorter distances for shorter (or weaker) legs. Each walker raised funds for their own charity, but a big thank-you must be given to Helen Bulbeck at Brainstrust for putting a huge amount of work into the organisation. As well as raising lots of money through sponsorship and a raffle on the night, large quantities of beer and wine were consumed in the tent where entertainment and food were provided, endless laughter was to be heard all weekend – and a total of 642 miles were donated to the International Brain Tumour Alliance’s “Walk the World for Brain Tumours” (www.theibta.org)

Start planning now and join us next year – the event will be even bigger and better! Save the Date:

The John Fulcher Molecular Neuro-Oncology Laboratory
OFFICIAL LAUNCH - July 2009
Members of the management team from Imperial College, researchers, patients and major donors to BTRC gathered together at Charing Cross Hospital on Friday July 3rd, 2009 to celebrate the launch of the John Fulcher Molecular Neuro-oncology Laboratory, which is dedicated to brain tumour research and has been entirely funded by donations from BTRC. Head of Neurosciences & Mental Health, Professor Lefkos Middleton, and Head of Research for Imperial College and ICHT, Professor Jonathan Weber, both registered their appreciation for the contribution from private donations and recognised the need for partnership between the public and private sector – the BTRC research team outlined the work they have undertaken already, since the lab opened late last year and their plans for the future, and Mr Kevin O’Neill explained the goals to translate the laboratory work into targeted and personalised treatment plans for brain tumour patients.
The event was held in conjunction with a report issued by the group Brain Tumour Research, of which BTRC is a founding member and which Wendy Fulcher chairs, in response to a study on Inequality in Cancer funding that is being conducted by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer

Brain Tumour Research Charities Join Forces
April 2009

On April 28th, 14 brain tumour charities announced the official launch of Brain Tumour Research, of which BTRC is a founding member and Wendy Fulcher is Chairman. The launch event was held at the House of Commons, and was hosted by John Bercow MP, Chair of the Brain Tumour All Party Parliamentary Group. The newly-formed charity is a recognition that 14 voices in unison can speak more forcefully and loudly than individually, to raise awareness and increase funding for vital research.

Amber Ball 2009
A TRULY GLITTERING AFFAIR!

Park Lane’s iconic Dorchester Hotel was the venue for this year’s Amber Ball on March 27th, where 300 guests gathered in their finery to enjoy a spectacular evening of entertainment, fundraising activities and fine food and wine. It was a truly glittering affair!
Auctioneer “par excellence” Jeffrey Archer presided over the live auction with veritable aplomb and raised a staggering £38,000 single-handedly – additionally, silent auctions co-ordinated by Broad Gallery and Superstars; a star raffle prize of a trip to Bali and Hong Kong, donated by British Airways, Como Hotels and Mandarin Oriental Hotels; and other prizes donated by sponsors too numerous to list here – all helped us to raise a
record amount of £62,000.00!

As ever, we couldn’t achieve it without the generous sponsorship of so many supporters – and a room full of very generous guests! Our heartfelt thanks go out to them all.

International Brain Tumour Awareness Week
October 2008
The week of October 27 was designated as International Brain Tumour Awareness week by brain tumour-related charities and organisations around the world, with the purpose of gaining "greater collaboration, greater knowledge and greater hope"

Once again, as part of this, the International Brain Tumour Alliance (IBTA - www.the ibta.org) orchestrated a Walk Around the World to raise awareness: the World Walk went on all through 2008 and by the end of the Awareness Week over 100 walks took place. People undertook a sponsored walk and donated the mileage to the World Walk target which is three times the distance around the Earth at the Equator or 120,000 kms . IBTA asked the walkers to donate the funds raised to a local brain tumour research or support organisation including BTRC.

Sponsored Skydive at Headcorn Airfield
June 2008

My name is Miranda Murphy I am 26 years old and I recently lost my mum to a Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumour. Like many of us I'd never heard of such cancer and I certainly didn't think it would happen to someone so close to me. You often listen to other people's stories and feel deeply sorry for them but deep down you are relieved as you never think anything like that would ever happen to you.. but it does and that is why I want to raise awareness for Brain Tumour Research Campaign as not enough people are aware just how common brain tumours are. When my mum passed away I thought my world had ended because she was my world and best friend, then I realised how selfish I was being, I remembered how strong my mum was throughout the year she was fighting cancer and here I was moping around, that's when I knew I had to and wanted to do something about it. As much as I wanted to scream from the roof tops to raise awareness about brain tumours I didn't think the police would appreciate it so I decided to do a sky dive for charity instead.
Miranda jumped from a height of 10-13000 feet on Saturday 28th June and raised £2450
If you want to help Miranda and sponsor her, please send a cheque (made out to BTRC) to her at
Addison Corporate Marketing,
2 Cathedral Street, London, SE1 9DE
(or directly to BTRC stating that it is for Miranda)

Walk around the World
October 2007
Brain Tumour organisations around the world joined forces in late October to celebrate International Brain Tumour Awareness Week, led by IBTA (International Brain Tumour Alliance). One of their goals to raise awareness, was to invite people to "donate" their miles from any sponsored walk to a global target of the 25,000 mile circumference of the earth. We are delighted to report that they more than doubled their target, with over 56,500 miles contributed. Our own Veronica O'Connor and Elaine Johnston participated in the activity earlier in the year (see our Past Events page). See www.theibta.org for more details

Out of Africa!
July 2007

Mother and daughter Elaine and Kim Johnston have travelled 5,919 miles from Abroath to Tanzania to follow in the footsteps of the Maasai trek. They walked in the rift valley of the Ngorongoro Conservation area and around the Ngorongoro crater rim.
Elaine Johnston decided to do the sponsored trek in memory of her husband Mark, who died from a brain tumour two and a half years ago. They surpassed their original aim to raise £1 a mile, and raised a staggering £11,000 for BTRC. “The staff at Halliburton in Arbroath and Aberdeen, where my husband used to work, were very generous, as were the British Legion Pipe Band, and people at the Chapelpark Primary School in Forfar who have given me money throughout the year.”
Read more in their local newspaper, The Courier (Tayside & Fife)
Elaine and Kim have also contributed their miles to the"Walk Around the World" project organised by IBTA.

Walk around the World contribution
from Veronica
July 2007
Veronica has contributed her miles to the "Walk Around the World" project that is being organised by IBTA.

I walked from Fatima in Portugal to Lourdes in France via Santiago Compostela in Spain. It was a tough pilgrimage because of the very bad weather but any walk in support of BTRC is worth every minute. The walk took me through the villages and historical towns of Spain with their their wonderful churches, rural villages and stunning countryside. It was both a cultural and spiritual pilgrimage. I also knew John Fulcher for many years and was deeply saddened by his death from brain cancer. He was the most kindest of men and a true friend. I am very happy to support BTRC at all times as research into this type of cancer is a major priority to improve and save lives.
In addition, The IBTA is organising the first International Brain Tumo(u)r Awareness Week during 21-27 October 2007.

Parliamentary Lobby
March 2007

BTRC supporters joined about 40 members of the UBTC (United Brain Tumour Campaign) in a parliamentary lobby on 28th March 2007. The purpose was to draw MPs' attention to the inequalities in funding for brain tumour research as opposed to other cancers and to urge the government to provide sufficient funding for the early implementation of the new NICE guidelines for provision of cancer services. After the lobby, a packed meeting of the All Party Group on Brain Tumours was chaired by John Bercow, MP for Buckingham.
